Afriland Towers Disaster: How Quickly We Have Moved On

It is quite common in Nigeria to hear people talk about politicians waiting out the storm whenever a bad event occurs, as they are sure that Nigerians cannot seem to stand on business for a long time. And so, over and over again, we have disgraceful and even deadly events occur, and just a few days later, everyone moves on, like it never mattered. But to progress as a nation, we need to be able to learn and enforce lessons to forestall a reoccurrence.

Yet another Road Trip – Part 2

From Abuja, I headed to Keffi in Nasarawa State, hoping to reach Kaduna State via that route. Reaching Keffi just before 9pm, I considered staying there for the night, but decided to move on. Locating an Akwanga-bound vehicle, I sat in harmattan breeze-tempered amazement for the approximately one-hour journey to Nasarawa’s northern border. Every day, millions of Nigerians ply the country’s vast road networks. The belief by most, despite some doubters, is that they would get to their respective destinations, and would return to their homes at the end of the day, the state of the roads notwithstanding. For many, their wishes come true, but for some, their journey gives them what they never bargained for.
