Dangote Did Not Cause Deadly Trailer Accidents

While the title of this article may trigger some persons to ask if I have Dangote cement or petrol in my pockets, if I can be given just some time to explain, maybe my integrity would be unquestioned. Yes, it is true that trailers either belonging to or affiliated to the Dangote Group have wreaked havoc on the Nigerian public, including the recent killing of Ruth Otabor, but while it is easy to request for Uncle Dangote’s head on a spike, the accidents are not of his making. Rather, they are simply a symptom of a more complex problem to be solved.

For Nigerian Lives Lost at Ologbo

How many lives is too much? One? Two? Hundred? If some random “racist White person” had ended the life of a Black Nigerian, we would likely be up in arms highlighting the low value placed on a black life. However, back home, we suffer worse from persons with the same skin colour whose words and actions demonstrate what Michael Jackson articulated as “they don’t really care about us”. This flagrant unimportance is the reason many Nigerians lost dependence on their lives while Nigeria marked its 63rd Independence Day.

Every day, millions of Nigerians ply the country’s vast road networks. The belief by most, despite some doubters, is that they would get to their respective destinations, and would return to their homes at the end of the day, the state of the roads notwithstanding. For many, their wishes come true, but for some, their journey gives them what they never bargained for.
